The sensor can be found approximately with a slightly magnetized nail (if a magnet is used, the sensor saturates too fast). The phone and the nail are placed on a table, so the movement of the nail (which is laying on the table) is locked to the xy-plane. If the nail is moved alongside the phone (the tip points into the direction of the phone), the position of the sensor can be "triangulated" by using the nail orientation where the magnetic field is at its maximum.

The experiment "Magnetic field" just gives the raw data from the phone's magnetometer.

The magnetometer is quite sensitive as it is designed to measure the earth's magnetic field to act as a compass. However, you should not trust its absolute values as they are easily influenced by magnetizations in the phone (which can even be altered by external fields) and since most phones try to recalibrate this sensor once in a while to compensate for these influences.
